About the event
Laura Moore and Joann Carhart Levy have long been “painting buddies”. They both paint plein air landscapes across the West along with the animals Laura finds in these locations. Laura paints in pastels and Joann paints in oils, pastels and even the occasional acrylic abstract. They have explored painting locations across Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Come fall you will find them painting our Rocky Mountain colors near mountain streams in the Vail Valley. This exhibit showcases their works done at mutual painting locations.
They both have studied in workshops and classes, attended Plein Air Conventions, and painted many of our Eagle County ranches as part of the Vail Valley Art Guild’s “Ranch Project”. This month they will also be exhibiting at the Guild’s annual “Art and Jazz” show at Colorado Mountain College.
Come meet these artists at the Avon Library on Saturday, September 9th, from 1 – 5 pm for a reception and live painting session where you can see oil and pastel techniques demonstrated by Laura and Joann. Light refreshments will be served.
Don't miss their exclusive show, "Painting Partners," at the Avon Public Library, hanging throughout September during normal library hours.
Joann Carhart Levy
Primarily a plein air painter, with oils and pastel being her preferred mediums, Joann is influenced by nature, the environment and the magnificent scenery Colorado has to offer with its changing seasons. Her paintings do not compete with what a camera can portray, however they convey the experience of what she sees in front of her as she paints. Most paintings are completed in a single outdoor session as not to lose the spontaneity of the scene. Abstract brush strokes and impasto techniques utilizing texture and color are evident in her work. Joann’s paintings include landscapes, florals and more recently abstracts. She participates in artist workshops that contribute to her experience as a painter. She is a founding member of the Vail Valley Art Guild in the Vail Valley, Colorado.
Laura Moore
Laura grew up at her family’s guest ranch near Jackson Hole, WY. They raised many animals, including lots of horses. She had the unique opportunity to get to know creatures large and small, both domesticated and wild, and became a true outdoor enthusiast at a young age. Her paintings of animals reveal her love and understanding for them and allow each subject’s unique characteristics to shine through.
Her love of nature is also expressed in her plein air paintings. She goes out in all kinds of weather eager to paint the beauty of the wilderness and all its wonder firsthand. There she captures the light and colors around her, including the cast shadows and little sparkles on rippling water.
After joining the Vail Valley Art Guild in 2017, she created many pastel paintings of ranches and ranch animals which were featured in Vail Symposium’s spectacular show, “Ranching in Colorado Through History and Art”.
Laura studied design at the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver and now lives in the Vail Valley where she enjoys easy access to the back country’s ever-changing landscape.
