About the event
Presentation Topic: What we call an “abstract” in photography, is rarely actually an abstract. Abstracts in art refer to pieces that are non- representational and that do not depict scenes or objects in the world or have discernible subject matter. Think of the enormous drip “action paintings” of Jackson Pollock, or the red, yellow, white, and black squares of Piet Mondrian. Paintings made by those artists, and many others, are not about a subject. They are about form, motion, color, and emotion, and leave a great deal up to the interpretation of the viewer.
Photography by its nature, interprets something that exists. So it’s impossible for a photograph to fit the standard definition of an abstract. But what an abstract is about (form, motion, color, and emotion) is very much within the capabilities of photography. In this program by professional outdoor photographer, David W.
