About the event
Join photographer and naturalist Rick Spitzer on September 7th 2023 at 5:30 PM in the Gypsum Library and learn about the Great American Annular Eclipse of 2023. This eclipse will cross the Western United States on Saturday, October 14th. Seven states are in the path. The maximum eclipse will pass over the Four Corners of Colorado. Eagle County will view an 80% eclipse at 10:34 AM.
Rick traveled to Driggs Idaho and photographed a Total Eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017. This program will review that experience. More importantly it will show you the planning you and your family need to consider to be ready for this annular eclipse.
There is a map at https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2023-october-14 that will show you where Maximum occurs and what you will see in other parts of the country.
Rick has taught astronomy and physics for 19 years and knew exactly what he was going to see during all phases of that Total Eclipse. Even so, it was an experience he will never forget. For many this was a spiritual experience. As a high school biology teacher he worked as a Supervisory Park Ranger Naturalist in Rocky Mountain National Park for 15 summers. He moved into computer technology and was an IT Director for two school districts over 15 years. He has published two books, Focus on Photography: A Simple Guide to Better Pictures and Colorado Mountain Passes: The State’s Most Accessible High Country Roadways. Rick has done many programs for Eagle County Libraries and is a frequent contributor to the Vail Daily.
